Dear Friends in Christ,

Last week many of you had your pictures taken for our next Pictorial Directory. The timing was not the best because some people were on vacation or work prevented some of you from participating. I want to give special thanks to Mary Fogarty and Annie for heading up this project. It is a great way to put names to faces you see at Mass.

I will be gone next weekend. I have another meeting of the National Board for Engaged Encounter. My term is coming to an end this year but some great things have been happening. We are updating the whole weekend, which has been needed. We are also involved in giving input to the Bishop’s imitative on Marriage which is moving ahead. They have a website and are preparing a pastoral letter as well as identifying good resources and programs that can be used in parishes.

This week we are having Vacation Bible School and I am impressed with the energy and enthusiasm of those working on the program. Danette Lanzafami is heading up the program. Please keep the teachers and children in your prayers this week.

Blessings to all,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Dear Friends in Christ, Last Sunday we celebrated Pentecost, the sending of the Holy Spirit, and the beginning of the Church. I found myself late Sunday afternoon sitting in the Church after a very full weekend and giving thanks to God for the gift of the Spirit and for the working of the Holy Spirit in our midst. We had 19 baptisms this past weekend! On Tuesday, 14 of our young people received the Sacrament of Confirmation in Mt. Angel. This Sunday 65 children are receiving the Eucharist for the first time. Carolyn is preparing to enter a religious order. Yes, the Spirit is with us and enflames our hearts, and I give thanks to God for the gift that is each of you. Del Youngers has repaired and painted our Gazebo. It looks beautiful and I know there will be many wedding pictures taken there this summer. Thanks Del! Fr. Joe and I are on retreat at the abbey this coming week. I know that I have some meetings I cannot miss but I am looking forward to spending some time with my confreres and having more time for prayer. I will sure be praying for you as well. Blessings to all of you, Fr. William

Abundant Life in Christ

Dear Parishioners, Well, I am going to take a turn writing a letter to you today. Usually you have a letter from Fr. William, but he took a couple of days off for this week and is down at the beach. I said “good for him” he doesn’t do such things often enough in my view. I remember when I used to go to the beach. The ocean is a peaceful place to visit and to walk. Years ago in the later 1970’s I was assigned to the Sacred Heart Parish in Tillamook and I could get to the beach often then. I would go over to Oceanside and walk on the beach… it was great. I was new in the parish and I was feeling sort of guilty because I was walking on the beach more than I was visiting homes… so later I got up a little courage to home visit better, and I found out that I was so new the parishioners weren’t all that disturbed because I hadn’t come for a visit. Things are going better for me - a little over a week ago I had some chest pains, so I went to the hospital… and when you tell them you have chest pains, they get all excited and start to really work you over and give you tests. Well they decided it wasn’t my heart… but never discovered for sure what it was. It was more in my upper torso and neck… maybe I had one too many hot peppers. Anyway, they gave me some meds I am not sure I need. But I have been feeling pretty good. One of the problems with one of the medicines is that it pushes my blood sugar up… I don’t need that, but am getting off it in a few days. I don’t have any grandiose vacation days for the coming future. I used to go over to Idaho, but am not doing that anymore. A lifetime friend died up in my hometown, Chehalis, last week. We were friends for 78 years… met each other in the second grade and went all the way through grade school and high school together and would visit through the years. For the past 15 years he was progressively advanced in Alzheimer’s Disease, so he wasn’t so easy to visit with the past few years. I didn’t go to the funeral, but had a good talk with his wife and told her I wanted to come visit this week, because another boyhood friend was coming up from Honduras where he lives and we wanted to visit her together. So I am going up to Chehalis Wednesday to visit them all and a few other people I know up there. When I didn’t show up at the funeral some other friends called me to see if I was still OK - so I will see them too. A few people you know well stay in your hometown, although you aren’t there anymore…. but they remember you. That is a good feeling. Hope you are all well and enjoying the parish. I really love living here, it gives me something to do that I like to do - visit with all of you and some of the older people or ailing people in their homes, and offer parish masses and just keep a little busier that I would at the Abbey. So thank you for having me and being so nice to me. Love and prayers, Father Joe

Dear Friends in Christ, I am planning on leaving after Masses this weekend to go to the beach. Someone offered to let me use their beach house and I am going to make use of it for two days. I know that I need to get away and clear my head, and the beach always does that for me. Fr. Joe was in the hospital for two days. They never did figure out what was wrong but he is doing well now. We are not getting many applications for the position of Youth Minister. Please keep this intention in your prayers because it is so important. This Tuesday we are having a meeting of our planning committee to finalize our needs so that a prospectus can go out to architects to develop a master plan for us. During this Easter Season we are having a number of Baptisms, First Communions, and Confirmation. This is always exciting and brings a lot of energy and life to our parish. We hope to have pictures taken of everyone so that you know who they are. May the Peace of the Risen Christ be with all of you. Fr. William

HAPPY EASTER!!

Yes, we are in the midst of the 50 days of Easter, and may the Peace of the Risen Christ be with you!

Fr. Joe, Br. Thomas, and I all fought the flu during Holy Week but we made it through without mishap. I want to thank all those who helped to make our liturgies so beautiful and meaningful.

I want to report that we are moving ahead on our Long Range Planning. I want to give you some update. All the material collected and the discussions that have been happening have been compiled into a prospectus to be given to architects with which to develop a master plan. We hope to have this finished in the next two weeks, and to then send it out for bids. Everyone is in agreement that we need to first have a master plan for our property. Once we have a master plan, then we will have some visual concept of what we might have in the next ten years. Once we have that we can begin to prioritize and people may then offer input about what they think we should do. If you have any questions at this point, please contact a member of the Pastoral or Administrative Councils. I am pleased with the progress, and I know a Master Plan will give us something concrete to discuss and use as a roadmap as we continue moving forward.

I would like to mention that our secretary Annie is working very hard and does many extra things for us. However, she is not on duty during the weekends or evenings, and I ask that you not call her at those times. If there is some emergency or problem, please call me.

HAPPY EASTER!The Resurrection of Jesus is the central act of our faith. And the promise of Resurrection for us is at the heart of our Christian Life. We rejoice with those who received the Easter Sacraments this year: Susan Johnson, Teresa Andresen, Van Heath and Nick Lundsford. Six children were also baptized at the Spanish Mass. We now celebrate for 50 days the Easter Season. One way to begin is to take some Easter water and bless your homes. There is a bulletin insert with a blessing written by some of our parishioners. May the Peace of the Risen Christ indeed reign in your hearts!Fr. William

Palm Sunday

“The Lord’s Passion”

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last weekend 30 of our Youth and about 10 on the Leadership Team were on retreat. I spent a few hours with them on Saturday evening. During that time they had an hour of adoration, and an opportunity to make use of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I found it a very powerful time, and for many of the people the weekend was truly life changing. Thanks to Carolyn and her team for some great work!

Recently the Pastoral Council recommended that we begin English classes as a way to bring the Hispanic and Anglo communities together. Our staff met with a representative from Chemeketa Community College. They have a great program that involves volunteers running the classes. We want to begin the program here in April. We need volunteers willing to lead the sessions. You do not need to know Spanish or how to teach. Chemeketa has a program on two Saturdays to assist volunteers and all the material needed is in the books.

Chemeketa says they have 250 volunteers already doing this program and it has prospered. If you want more information, please contact me. I hope a number of you would be willing to join this program.

This week we enter into the heart of the Church year. I will be going to the Cathedral to participate with the Bishop and the priests of the Archdiocese in the Chrism Mass and the blessing of the oils and renewing my Priestly commitment. The liturgies on Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Vigil and Easter help to focus on the incredible saving mystery of Jesus. The Easter Vigil itself is the climax of the week. I ask that you participate in as many of these liturgies as possible.

It has been a tradition to take up a collection on Good Friday for the work of the Church in the Holy Land. We will again do so this year. The Franciscans staff the shrines and minister to the people, and right now the Catholics there are under extreme attack and pressure. Our support of them is needed more than ever.

May this week indeed be a Blessed one for each of you,

Fr. William

Jesus learned that a friend of his named Lazarus had died. When Jesus arrived at the village, Lazarus had alraady been in the tomb for four days. When Martha and Mary showed him the tomb, Jesus wept. Jesus then asked some of the onlookers to take away the stone from the entrance to the tomb, and then he prayed to his Father in heaven (he did this so that the people gathered would believe that it was the Father who had sent him). Jesus called for Lazarus to come out of the tomb, and he did

My dear Friends in Christ,

Last week the local ministers had their monthly meeting. We are finally getting more to come to the meetings. A number of pastors mentioned that they did not have many young children at their services. I was thinking of that, especially during the 10:30 and Noon Masses where we have lots of children. It is really uplifting to see so many children, and I give thanks for

all of them.

Lent is passing very quickly. I would have you note Leonardo’s presentation of the Passion on Friday at 7 pm. We talked about having soup before the performance, but that has been cancelled. I think we are going to have a great turnout and I know people will want to be seated early. I hope many of you come because this can be a great way to prepare for Holy Week. Also a reminder that on Thursday evening I will be available for the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 6:30-8:00.

Someone recently mentioned that I am putting in too many hours. I know that is true and I am aware of that, especially at evening meetings. I am often worn down and say things I later regret. I mentioned that the Scrutinies for the RCIA were about soul searching. I have been doing some soul searching lately and hopefully I will set some limits for myself and take more time for myself. I realize that I need to listen to some of the advice that I give others.

Please continue to remember in your prayers our Catechumens, as well as our Youth on retreat this weekend.

Blessings to all,

Fr. William

Lent is already half over. I have been doing a little reflecting about myself. I realize I have not been exercising like I had planned, but have kept up looking at the parish list and praying for all of you. That has been the best part of Lent for me so far. This is a good time for all of us to renew our Lenten practices as we move closer to Holy Week.

We have had good turnouts for the Stations of the Cross. I want to remind you about Leonardo DeFilippis giving a presentation of “The Passion by St. Luke” on Friday evening, March 14. I have known Leonardo for many years and his work is incredible. This was the first presentation that he did. This would be a great way to enter into Holy Week.

The Pastoral and Administrative Councils and the Long-Range Planning committee continue to do good work. It is becoming clearer that our facilities are really being used heavily and we will have to do some expansion before long. This is both exciting and scary.

Next weekend we are having a large Youth Retreat that is actually being put on by Carolyn and her team of young adults. Please keep all of them in your prayers. What a great experience that our young people are actually putting on a retreat for other parishioners! I know that they have grown a great deal through this experience.

May this season of Lent continue to be a time of grace for you.

“Living Water”

Dear Friends in Christ, The past few weeks our Spanish Mass has been totally packed. Many new families have registered. I don’t know what is behind all this. I know that our Religious Education program in Spanish is overflowing and we have had to get more teachers. We have been making use of Northwest Family Services to put on a program of Marriage Enrichment, and we have over 30 couples enthusiastically participating. This is definitely stretching our facilities and our programs!Along this line, one of the goals coming out of Long Range Planning is bringing the Spanish and English speaking programs together. The Pastoral Council has been talking about having one Religious Education program. This is a terrific idea but has a lot of logistical problems. We are putting together a committee to study this proposal. If any of you would like to be on this committee, please let me know. It has been suggested that we simply implement this idea. However, it has so many ramifications: Mass times, should we do religious education on two different days to accommodate everyone? This has so many implications, and seems almost overwhelming, so this will be a very important committee. I want to again make note of the bi-millennium of St. Paul beginning in June as another opportunity to do activities and programs together. This is definitely a major issue for our parish, but I also see it as a terrific opportunity.Fr. Joe’s health continues to improve and he has been celebrating the Eucharist on a regular basis again. This has been a great help to me.I have been continuing to use the parish list to remember you in my prayers and I have found this to be a great Lenten practice. Not everyone is in the pictorial directory so I find myself using several different lists. It sure helps when I actually see your picture. I hope your Lenten practices are going well.Blessings to all,Fr. William

Dear Friends in Christ,

Last Sunday we had the “Enrollment of Names” into the Book of the Elect. These are the Catechumens and Candidates who will be receiving the Easter Sacraments. After the enrollment occurred here in the Parish they went to the Cathedral to be presented to the Bishop. Our Catechumens this year are Teresa Andresen, Susan Johnson, and Van Heath. Our Candidate is Nick Lundsford. Please keep them all in your prayers during this time of Lent as they complete their preparation for Easter.

On Ash Wednesday our collection at Mass was for SACA. You donated almost a thousand dollars. As Pastor and Board member of SACA, I want to thank all of you for your generosity. It was a great Lenten gift to those in our community in need.

June 29th is the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. Pope Benedict has declared that beginning on this feast the Church will celebrate the bi-millennium of St. Paul, and it will last for one year. I want our Parish to take this seriously because we are under the Patronage of St. Paul. I see three things happening for us during this bi-millennium year. First, Paul is the great Evangelizer and I want us to put special emphasis on Evangelization. Some of us are already meeting with the Paulist Center in Portland to plan a program. Secondly, I want us to celebrate who we are as a Parish. I hope we can have several events in our parish this year to facilitate this, including a Parish Mission, Fiesta, dinners and entertainment. Thirdly, we are doing Long Range Planning and my hope is that during our Celebration Year we can begin to implement and move forward on this. I think all of this can be both exciting and spiritually renewing for us. I am in the process of setting up committees for both Evangelization and the bi-millennium celebration. If you are interested in serving on one of these committees, please let me know. I will keep all of you informed as we move closer to this year long celebration.

“Sin and Grace”

Dear Friends in Christ, Lent has begun! The Small Faith Sharing Groups are now meeting. I was in two this past week and enjoyed them very much. This Sunday we have the Rite of Enrollment for our Catechumens, who later will go to the Cathedral to join others in the Archdiocese as they enter into these last days of intense preparation for receiving the Easter Sacraments. Please keep them in your prayers. I just turned my BONA OPERA (this is what we use in the monastery, listing what we are doing for Lent) into the Abbot to get his signature. It is still not too late for you to make some definite plans for doing some special activities for Lent. I think one of the best things we could all do is to speak positively or to give compliments to each other, especially within the family. Our world seems so full of negativity and it is so easy to get caught up in it unless we make a conscious effort to be different. I think we all love to receive compliments! I mentioned last week that one thing I am doing is taking the parish list and praying for several of you each day. This will help me be aware of all of you, and to lift each of you up to God. I am very much looking forward to this. May each of you have a very grace-filled Lent. Fr. William

The women in the Sewing Circle presented the parish with a check for $900. It is money they earned this year making quilts and other hand sewn items. They meet every Monday morning and are evry dedicated. If anyone else would like join them, you are very welcome. They would love to have some new hands!I will be gone next weekend. I have another National Engaged Encounter meeting. The break will probably be good for me. The meeting is in Tallhassee, Fllorida, which is hard to get to so I have to leave a day early.A new speaker system has been installed in the church. It distributes the sound really well but might need some adjustment because it was tested without having people in church. This is another item that surfaced in our Lord Range Planning process. We have been slowly getting some of the easier items finished.Blessings to all, Fr. William
